About Us
The Vanguard Centre is the UK’s first, and for the longest time, only, full-time HEMA and Archery venue. We specialise in instruction and coaching of Historical European swordfighting from the medieval, renaissance, and revolution eras of history, and indoor target archery. We have a fully equipped hall with all the bows, arrows, swords, safety gear, targets, pads, and other training accessories you could ask for. Our instructing team and staff have years of experience and international recognition in their fields, and are dedicated to providing the best education and enjoyment of martial arts and shooting that we can.

Beginners
It is quite reasonable to wonder what you might expect when you come to visit us for your first session, so we have put together some information for beginners.

Classes
We run classes and sessions every day of the week – and any time when we are not running a regular class, we might be running a one-off activity, and otherwise the hall can be available for booking.

Code of Conduct
The Vanguard Centre has a code of conduct that we require all staff, members, participants, and visitors to follow. This not only sets out the safety rules and the guidelines for the practice of our activities, but also the social and interpersonal behaviour that we expect.

Competitive Successes
At the Vanguard Centre, we have always placed our emphasis squarely on learning how to fence effectively and according to our historical source material. We don’t train specifically for tournaments, but every so often our members will enter a tournament to see how well our training is working – and we do have quite a history of Vanguard Centre members bringing home medals and recognition, not just from the UK, but from across Europe.
